Contains correspondence, personal papers, reports, notebooks, newspaper clippings, scrapbooks, photograph albums, books, and professional and scholastic emphemera that span Stagg's personal and professional life, 1866-1964. The majority of the collection documents Stagg's coaching career at the University of Chicago and his impact on national intercollegiate athletics, amateur sports, and education. The collection also includes material on the founding of the University of Chicago, its presidents and developments in education until 1933. Material documents the effects of World War I and II on American collegiate life, the history of the Olympics until 1928, the establishment of professional sports, prohibition, leading national and sports figures, and Chicago during the Jazz Age.
